How to meditate on God's love?

How to meditate on God's love? What are the ways you can meditate on God's love? We are going to tackle these questions today. It is not limited to just one way, but there are a number of ways how you can meditate on God's love.

Why is it so important to meditate on God's love? When you have the revelation how much God loves you, you can be sure nothing in this world can affect you, no matter what happens around you or what circumstance you face in this world. You can be sure even when everything else in this world fails, God's love for you never fails. And He knows how to lead you, guide you, and make a way for you, even in the most tumultuous of times.

To begin with, Joshua 1:8 (NKJV) says, 'This Book of the Law (in our context, the Scripture, the Word of God) shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.'

This word 'meditate' here is 'hagah' in Hebrew, and it can have many meanings. In other words, this word 'hagah' is quite wide in its scope. According to James Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, it can mean any of these: 'to ponder, to imagine, to mutter, to roar (i.e. to speak aloud, to declare), to speak, to study, to talk, to utter'.

As you can see here, there are a number of ways to meditate on the Word of God. For example, there is a place to silently ponder or contemplate on a Bible verse that the Lord has spoken to you. Yet there is a place to speak it out aloud for your ears to hear.

Also, there is a place to mutter it, i.e. to speak under your breath. To mutter, according to Oxford Dictionary, can be defined as 'to speak or say something in a quiet voice that is difficult to hear (i.e. only you can hear, but people around you may not be able to hear). It can also be defined as 'words that you speak very quietly to yourself'. Therefore, to mutter is to speak to yourself and not for other people to hear.

Back to the word 'meditate' or 'hagah'. You can see there are eight main definitions of this word, i.e. to ponder, to imagine (these are silent), to mutter (i.e. to speak under your breath to yourself and not for other people to hear), to roar (i.e. to declare it out aloud), to speak, to talk, to utter, and of course, to study the Word of God. So, to meditate is also to study what God says about you.

We can meditate on different aspects of God's characteristics. But for today, we will just focus on God's love. I will show you 12 points on God's love from the Bible as an example, using New King James Version as the basis, but personalized for you. You can ponder or contemplate on each of these Bible verses. Or you can mutter it or utter it, speaking it over and over again to yourself.

1. I love God's name. God looks upon me and is merciful to me, and He will direct my steps with His Word (Psalm 119:132-133)

2. I am precious in God's sight and He loves me and honors me (Isaiah 43:4)

3. Nothing in this world can separate me from the love of God (Romans 8:35)

4. In all things, I am made more than conquerors through God who loves me (Romans 8:37)

5. I have the love of God, and God's love for me never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8)

6. My Lord Jesus Christ and God my Father, who has loved me and given me everlasting consolation and good hope, comforts my heart and establishes me in every good word and work (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17)

7. I love Jesus and rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory (1 Peter 1:8)

8. I have no fear in love, because perfect love casts out fear. I love Him because He first loved me (1 John 4:18-19)

9. God is love. I am born of God and I belong to God. I receive the love of God now and I can love one another (1 John 4:7-8)

10. God abides in me and His love has been perfected in me (1 John 4:12)

11. The life which I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God who loves me and gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20)

Meditations on God's love

Joshua 1:8 says, 'This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success'.

The word 'meditate' here in Joshua 1:8 is 'hagah' in Hebrew, and it can mean 'to ponder, to mutter, to utter, to speak, to talk'. Notice the word 'mouth' here? Therefore, in the context of this verse here, meditation involves your mouth.

I have been taught since young to never allow the Word of God to depart from my mouth, and I am still keeping to it. This practice has been one of the 'anchors' in this journey of faith of mine, and my spiritual 'muscles' have been tremendously built through the years. I thank God for that.

When you speak the Word of God out aloud, your ear hears it, and that's when your faith arises. Romans 10:17 says, 'So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God'.

I heard these words from the Lord for this time and season:
"There is no fear in love, because My perfect love casts out fear. Look to Me, because My love for you never fails. When everything else fails, My love never fails. This is a time to set your mind on My love for you, and set your mind on how much I love you."

Notice the words 'This is a time to set your mind on My love for you'? One way to 'set your mind on His love for you' is by meditating on God's love for you. So, go ahead! Fill your mind with God's love for you! (Philippians 4:8-9) And believe for it! Declare these verses below aloud, and let your ear hear! I have personalized each of these verses for you. Speak each of these verses - 10, 30, 60, 100 times, or even more - till you know you are walking in the fullness of each of these verses that God has given you. Amen!

The entrance of God's words gives light!

Psalm 119:130 (NKJV): The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

God's Word is light, and the entrance His words gives light! And when the light comes, darkness flees! This light also gives understanding to the simple (i.e. those who do not know or understand).

Psalm 119:131 then says, 'I opened my mouth and panted, for I longed for Your commandments (Your words)'. So, how do you allow God's words to enter your life? By 'opening your mouth' and 'eating' His words!

Recently, the Lord spoke these words to a congregation I was ministering to:
"Many of you are crossing the threshold, and many of you are entering a new season of breakthrough that you've been waiting far too long. But now is your time! Your time has come! This is also the time to eat of My Word! Eat, and keep eating, so you will be strong for the journey ahead!"

These words actually reminded me of Elijah when the angel of the Lord said to him, "Arise and eat!" (see 1 Kings 19:5-7) Indeed, for many of you, you need to 'eat' so you'll have the strength for the 'journey' ahead! This is not the time to 'lay down', and definitely not the time to 'throw a pity party'! The Bible says Elijah then went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God (see 1 Kings 19:8). By the way, 'forty' in Hebrew numeric simply means 'total rule, total dominion, or completed course.'

And how do you 'eat' of His Word? By meditating in His Word

Joshua 1:8 says, 'This Book of the Law (the Word) shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous and, and then you will have good success'.

It's time to go back to basics today!

“Oh! Don't tell me about this meditating thing! I have meditated a lot those days! I know the Word already!” Some might say.

Well, it’s just like saying, “Oh! I’ve eaten a lot of good, nutritious food those days! Many years ago! I don’t need to eat nowadays!”

As a matter of fact, to continue to stay strong and healthy every day, you need to continue to eat good, nutritious food every day! The same it is with your 'spiritual food', i.e. the Word. This is definitely one 'food' that you should be taking in continuously (and consistently)! And of course, 'you are what you eat'! The entrance of good food brings good health; but on the other hand, the entrance of junk food brings junk health! So, you've got to know what you eat, and eat the right food! Because too much junk makes people sick!

In Joshua 1:8, the word 'meditate' here is 'hagah', from the alephbets 'hey-gimel-hey' (הָגָה) in Hebrew. 'Hey' (ה) speaks of God's grace (or God's supply, God's ability), whereas ‘Gimel’ (גָ) is a picture of ‘foot’, which speaks of ‘movement’.

And you know what this means? As you meditate in His Word day and night, you'll also be moving from grace to grace! (i.e. growing from grace to grace, or grace upon grace)

People of God, do you want more of His grace, His supply (of every good thing from heaven) and His ability in your life? Then meditate in His Word day and night, and repeatedly again and again! Notice Joshua 1:8 says: 'it (the Word) shall not depart from your mouth'. See the word 'mouth' here? I used to wonder why the Bible never says 'it shall not depart from your heart', or 'it shall not depart from your mind', but the Bible says 'it shall not depart from your mouth'!

Let me explain.

Contrary to what many people think, 'meditation' in the context of Joshua 1:8 here isn't so much about 'silent contemplation' of the Word. Instead, it is about speaking out (or confessing aloud) with your mouth God's words day by day. Psalm 35:28 says, 'And my tongue shall speak ('hagah') of Your righteousness and of Your praise all the day long'. Psalm 71:24 says, 'My tongue also shall talk ('hagah') of Your righteousness all the day long'. Job 27:4 says, 'My lips will not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter ('hagah') deceit'. See 'hagah' (הָגָה) is translated as 'speak', 'talk', and 'utter' here? All these involve your voice, and not silence! As you 'hagah' (הָגָה), you'll also hear it. And faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God! (Romans 10:17) Also, your faith hardly comes when you hear junks!

You see, you don't need to hear 'world news' repeatedly over and over again. Have you noticed the news that you hear from your television set is often repetitive (shown over and over again) throughout the day? And with all those 'bad news' one hears nowadays, it's no surprise that one would feel even more 'terrible' upon hearing it! Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't keep abreast of what is happening in the world in that case, but the truth is hearing too much of 'bad news' will never help nourish your spirit or strengthen your soul! The Bible never says 'the entrance of the world gives light', but instead 'the entrance of the Word gives light'! 'World' and 'Word'! And one little 'L' makes a whole lot of difference!

The good news is there's always an answer in the Word to every situation or problem you face in this world! So, the more you meditate ('hagah') in the Word (for any particular area of your life) day by day, the more light enters that particular area of your life (whether in health, in providence, in your thought life, or in every other area of your life).

As you confess aloud God’s Word into your life day by day, this light of His Word also causes darkness in that area of your life to flee! So, use your eyes to see the Word, your mouth to speak the Word, and your ear to hear the Word! And as Joshua 1:8 says, you'll be right on your way to prosperity (in any area of your life), and you'll have good success. Amen!

Examples of Bible verses (personalized) that you can speak into your life over and over again:

In Christ, there is no darkness at all, for God is light and He lives in me (1 John 1:5)

In Christ, my light has come, and the glory of the Lord is seen upon me (Isaiah 60:1-2)

In Christ, my path is as the shining light, that shines brighter and brighter till the full light (Proverbs 4:18)

In Christ, I am empowered by the Holy Spirit, and I am established (2 Corinthians 1:21)

In Christ, I give thanks for He always leads me in triumph in Christ, and through me diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place (2 Corinthians 2:14)

Fill your thoughts with the Word of God!

2 Corinthians 10:4 (NKJV): For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (earthly way) but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.

The word 'weapons' here is 'hoplon' in Greek (from the word 'hepo'), meaning 'tool, armor, instrument that is offensive for war'. Notice the word 'offensive' here? By the way, what is the 'offensive' part of the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-17? The swordEphesians 6:17 says, 'And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God'.

Hence, the weapons mentioned in 2 Corinthians 10:4 speak of none other than the Word of God! And of course, unless we start wielding this 'sword', it will forever be lying idle on the ground (or rather, in the bookshelf!).

2 Corinthians 10:5 then completes 2 Corinthians 10:4. It says, 'Casting down arguments (in KJV, 'imaginations') and every high thing (i.e. earthly thing/matter/concern) that exalts itself against the knowledge of God (includes God's plan and destiny for your life), bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ'. See the word 'thought' here?

Recently, the Lord said, "This is a year of glory, but how deep you want Me to bring you into My glory depends on what you allow to nestle on your head!" He then said further, "What you allow to nestle on your head (i.e. your thought/mind) will then become a stronghold, whether good or bad." These words then immediately reminded me of Colossians 3:2 that says, 'Set your mind on things above (Him and His things), not on things on the earth (carnal/earthly things)'.

People of God, you are now in a time when the Lord is bringing His people deeper (than ever before) into His glory. However, how deep His people can go depends on what His people allow to nestle on their heads!
Note: 'To nestle' means 'to settle comfortably, or warmly, as in a bird's nest'.

So, what is nestling on your head now? Is it the Word of God, or is it something else? Or rather, what do you fill your thoughts with most of the time?

For some, it may be lustful thoughts. For others, it may be someone whom they keep thinking about day and night (more than they think about God). For many others, it may be a continuous negative, anxious thought. There are also some who keep thinking that people are gossiping/talking behind their back all the time! If not overcome and dealt with, each of these problems may then become an obsession in one's life. In other words, they become a 'slave' to whatever they keep thinking about!

The fact here is if you keep thinking about a problem (or an earthly concern/matter/person/situation), that problem (or an earthly concern/matter/person/situation) will inevitably 'expand' and dominate your life. By the same token, if you keep thinking about the Word of God, the Word of God will in turn 'expand' and dominate your life! That's how things work in one's thought life!

But the good news is you already have the weapons to pull those unwanted 'strongholds' down!

2 Corinthians 10:4 says that your 'weapons' to overcome and have victory in your thought life does not come from any earthly (carnal) way or method, but by the Word of God, which is mighty for pulling down strongholds!

Now, what does God say about the Word of God here?

Hebrews 4:12 says, 'For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart'. The word 'discern' here is 'kritikos' in Greek (from the word 'krino'), which means 'verdict, determine, decide'. It means the Word of God is the key to determining your thought life, and therefore changing your thought life!

That's the importance of the Word of God, and that's also why the apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 3:18, 'But we all, with unveiled face, beholding (looking to) as in a mirror the glory of the Lord (i.e. Jesus, who is also the Word of God), are being transformed into the same image (i.e. the Word of God) from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord'.
Note: What you keep beholding or thinking about most of the time will eventually become you. So, if you keep beholding, thinking, and saying what God says (i.e. the Word of God), you'll have what the Word of God says!

The answer to 'pulling down whatever stronghold that is nestling on your head' (i.e 'whatever stronghold that is hindering you from going deeper into His glory') therefore lies in meditating the Word of God.
Note: Meditating the Word of God does involve the use of your mouth as an instrument to mutter or speak His Word out aloud (over and over again). It's when your mouth speaks that your ear hears! Romans 10:17 says, 'So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God'.

Here are some of the Word of God personalized and compiled for you to meditate today:

1. I set my mind on the things above and not on the things on this earth. I set my mind on the things of God (Colossians 3:2)

2. God keeps me in perfect peace because my mind is stayed on Him and I trust Him (Isaiah 26:3)

3. I live according to the Spirit and mind the things of the Spirit. I am spiritually-minded and have life and peace (Romans 8:5-6)

4. My desire is only for the Lord and it is a tree of life (Proverbs 13:12)

5. I fear the Lord and I am a fountain of life (Proverbs 14:27)

6. I fear the Lord and I prolong my days (Proverbs 10:27)

7. God sends His Word and heals me and He delivers me from destruction (Psalm 107:20)

8. I hear God's Word and receive them and the years of my life are many. I take firm hold of God's Word and will not let it go. I keep them, for they are my life (Proverbs 4:10, Proverbs 4:13)

9. I am now the righteousness of God through Christ. I walk the way of righteousness and I have life. In my pathway there is no death (2 Corinthians 5:21, Proverbs 12:28)

10. My tongue promotes health (Proverbs 12:18)

11. All the works of the devil upon my body and soul are destroyed, and I now have perfect health in Christ Jesus (1 John 3:8, Acts 10:38)

12. Jesus Himself took my infirmities and bore my sicknesses on the cross, and I am now healthy and have no sicknesses or bodily infirmities. The chastisement for my peace was upon Him and by His stripes I am healed (Matthew 8:17, Isaiah 53:5)

Meditating on the Word

Matthew 14:29-30 (NKJV): ...And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"

Naturally, 'walking on the water' is an impossible thing to do, and a fisherman Peter was, he knew this well enough. He also probably hasn't seen anyone doing it before. But a responsive disciple he was, he asked Jesus, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water", and Jesus responded, "Come". And that's when Peter began walking on the water! As long as Peter was focused on Jesus, he did walk on the water. But when he looked away from Him (and instead looked at the boisterous wind around him), he became afraid and began to sink!

Note: 'Walking on the water' here speaks of you 'walking supernaturally in what God has called or commanded you to do'.

People of God, it's the same today in your walk with God. As long as you are focused on Jesus (instead of the circumstances around you), you cannot and will not sink! Jesus is the Word (see John 1:1, John 1:14). So, 'Peter looking at Jesus' here speaks of you as a believer focusing on the Word!

You may be asking, "How on earth am I going to get through this situation?", or "How in the world am I going to 'achieve' this dream/prophecy? It seems too 'big' for me!"

Notice just before Peter asked if he could walk on the water, Jesus actually said these words, "Do not be afraid." Do you know why?

Now let's cross-refer to Joshua 1:8. It says, "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." By the way, 'this Book of the Law' here speaks of God's Word (or God's instructions). Interestingly, Joshua 1:8 is written in between Joshua 1:7 ("Be strong and very courageous...") and Joshua 1:9 ("Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."). See the inter-relation between 'meditating on the Word' and 'being strong and courageous'?

There's no accident why Joshua 1:9 comes after Joshua 1:8. In short, when you meditate on the Word, not only you'll make your way prosperous and have good success, you'll also be strong! Note that 'being strong and courageous' is opposite to 'being afraid and being dismayed'. These are antagonistic to each other. When you have one, you don't have the other. And that's why meditation on the Word is so crucial, especially in the midst of a 'storm' you are facing! When you focus on Jesus (the Word), you have no reason to be afraid, no matter how 'boisterous' the wind around you may be!

What are some of the verses God has been speaking to you in the recent weeks? I believe these verses you have received recently are not accidental. These are in fact keys to make your way prosperous and have good success this year! Meditate on these verses day and night! The word 'meditate' here in Joshua 1:8 is 'hagah' in Hebrew, which means 'to mutter, or to speak under your breath'. In Oxford Dictionary, the word 'mutter' is defined as 'speak or say something in a low voice that is hard to hear, i.e. under your breath'. Mutter these verses again and again. And yes, like chewing your favorite steak, and squeezing its 'juice' right in your mouth. Enjoy and savor it! Chew it again and again slowly, 40 times, 50 times, or even 60 times! And that's how you are going to mutter God's Word too!

Note that 'hagah' is not silent meditation or confessing the Word aloud. There is definitely a place for silent meditation, and of course there is also a place for confessing the Word aloud in a believer's life. But Joshua 1:8 does not refer to either of these.

Let's look at the Bible now.

Silent meditation (or 'contemplation on the Word') is not 'hagah', but a silent focusing upon God's Word. One example in the Bible is in Philippians 4:8 that says, "...Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things." In this verse, the word 'meditate' is translated in King James Version as 'think of', which is 'logizomai' in Greek, which means 'to think of something said'.

As for confessing the Word aloud (or 'uttering the Word, declaring the Word aloud, or speaking the Word aloud'), the word is 'homologeo' in Greek, which means 'say the same, or say as God says'. One example in the Bible is in Romans 10:9 that says, "That if you confess ('homologeo') with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Psalm 77:12 also clearly tells the difference between muttering ('hagah') and confessing the Word aloud. It says, "I will also meditate ('hagah') on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds." The word 'talk' here is pronounced 'siyakh' in Hebrew, which means 'to utter, to talk aloud, to declare, to converse with oneself aloud'.

This word 'hagah' is also found in Psalm 1:2-3 that says, "But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates ('hagah') day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper." That's how blessed you are as you meditate on the Word of God! Praise God!

Also, as you 'hagah', the Holy Spirit (represented by the 'river' in Psalm 1:3) will show you (or teach/lead/guide you) the deeper things, revealing to you more and more the way to prosperity!

Interestingly, the word 'hagah' in Hebrew comes from three alphabets, i.e. 'Hey - Gimel - Hey'. In Hebrew, 'Hey' (the fifth alphabet) means 'grace, revelation, or breath', whereas 'Gimel' (the third alphabet) means 'foot, walk, or transport'. So, 'Hey - Gimel - Hey' means 'moving from grace to grace, from revelation to revelation, or from breath to breath'. You know what? As you 'hagah' day and night, you'll move (grow) from grace to grace, and revelation upon revelation! Not just that, 'breath' also speaks of 'life'. So, 'hagah' also brings you life, and more life!

Jesus, the Word, is the way, the truth, and the life! (John 14:6)

In conclusion, whether you are currently in the midst of a humanly 'impossible' challenge (like Peter), or you are currently trusting God for something 'big' in your life (like Joshua), keep focusing on Jesus by meditating ('hagah') on the Word, and you will make your way prosperous, and you will have good success. Amen!

Meditating God's Word

Joshua 1:8: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

‘This Book of the Law’ here refers to the Word of God, the Bible. Joshua 1:8 says 'it shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night'. It simply means 'you shall keep meditating the Word of God day and night, every day, consistently'. This, my friend, is the key to your prosperity and good success!

In Joshua 1:8, the word ‘meditate’ is ‘hagah’ in Hebrew. It actually means ‘to ponder, to speak, or to utter’. Romans 10:17 says, ‘so then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God’. It means your faith arises when you hear the Word of God being spoken and confessed, and in order to hear the Word being spoken, somebody has to speak it out. That’s what ‘hagah’ means. That's why Joshua 1:8 says, 'it shall not depart from your mouth'. The word 'mouth' here implies you need to 'speak it out'! So, the word ‘meditate’ in Joshua 1:8 does not actually mean 'to contemplate the Word of God silently', though there’s a place for this in your quiet time.

As you meditate one particular verse (or a promise of God), begin speaking it out under your breath, many times over. Now you don’t have to shout it loud for everybody to hear, but you can speak it over and over again under your breath. You can even do this wherever you are. This way, you are speaking into your spirit man throughout the day. Every morning, I'd choose a verse (or a promise) in the Bible (as led by the Lord) and begin uttering it over and over again. I'd continue meditating in it throughout the day, and I tell you, it has changed my life tremendously!

Joshua 1:8 continues with ‘that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it’ (New King James Version). In New International Version, it says, ‘so that you may be careful to do everything written in it’. You are what you speak or confess. So, the more you confess what God says (about who you are in Him), the more you'll be (and do) what God says (about who you are in Him)! God definitely wants you to prosper and be a good success.

As you 'meditate in the Word of God' and ‘be careful to do what the Word says', then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. This is God's promise for you. People pay so much nowadays for motivational speakers or for 'keys' (or secrets) to become prosperous and successful. But the fact is all the real 'keys' (or secrets) are already written in the Word of God for you to receive!

The Word of God is your essential 'spiritual food' to keep you strong spiritually, just as your 'physical food' is essential to keep you strong physically. Not only that, the Word of God is also your ‘handbook’ to prosperity and good success! So, beloved, go ahead and meditate God's Word every day! Personalize each verse for yourself. God's Word is indeed your personal 'handbook' in life. It will never fail you. For example, you can personalize Joshua 1:8 for yourself by confessing this way: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from my mouth, but I shall meditate in it day and night, that I may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then I will make my way prosperous, and then I will have good success”.

To begin with, meditate one verse today. Personalize it for yourself. Then, choose another verse the next day. Keep doing this every day, and you’ll surely be on your way to prosperity and good success!
